The Great Pretender

THE GREAT PRETENDER This interactive illustration in the form of a journal thematizes obsession and the need to know and figure out. It's about horrified fascination, decay and something so seperate from the human, that looking at it with a human gaze will never work. It is about trying to make sense of, find meaning and reason in something that has none. It is about nature and its unwavering precence, certainty and perceived cruelty. It is about the transitional, the inbetween, the abject, the liminal between unknowing/knowing, sanity/insanity, horror/fascination, life/death, reality/imagination. In this experimental project I explored the concept of decay in different forms as well as themes like obsession and the need to always find a reason for and meaning in anything and everything. Specifically the desire to understand and know, combined with obsession in the face of something unknowable and meaningless, here represented by nature and death. I also wanted to experiment with telling a story without a story, without a character who has identity or personality, mainly to emphasize that those aspects are irrelevant in the context of the setting and concept. I wanted to explore the certainity and ever presence of nature that we as humans tend to disregard, as well as work through the perceived cruelty and inexplicability of transcience and death.
