Mystery at Hand - A Victorian-Era Mystery TTRPG

Mystery at Hand is a tabletop role-playing game set in the mid-to-late Victorian era. You play ordinary people who suddenly find themselves caught up in strange, unsettling events that turn their everyday life upside down. The game uses the Carved from Brindlewood system, which means the final answer is always in the players’ hands. There’s no prewritten culprit, and not even the GM knows the “right” solution. When the investigation wraps up, the group decides who to accuse based on the clues they’ve uncovered. Play the same mystery with a different group, and you might land on a completely different theory and a completely different culprit. The setting is the industrial, outwardly prosperous Victorian age. Expanding cities like London hum with smoke, invention, and rapid social change. Railways and telegraphs are transforming daily life, and scientific progress is moving quickly. Yet beneath this modern surface, spiritualism, séances, and old superstitions still thrive. That tension between reason and belief makes the period perfect for mystery. The game assumes you have some basic familiarity with tabletop role-playing games. If you’re new, there are plenty of free guides and video playthroughs online to help you get started. Inside, you’ll find the complete rules: core moves, mechanics, character creation, and practical advice for the GM. Reference tables clarify what is and isn’t available in the Victorian period, including social class, technology, transport, and more, so everyone stays grounded in the setting. You’ll also get a character sheet, a rules reference sheet, and a GM cheat sheet. Finally, the game includes a collection of ready-to-play mysteries (now including optional printable Clue Cards), each placing players in intriguing situations to explore and solve. More may be added over time. If there’s a particular Victorian setting you’d like to see featured in a mystery, I’m happy to write it and add it to the collection available here. The game itself was entirely designed, written, and developed by humans :)
