It's Worse Than That! Vol 3

You don't use safety tools because someone might break. You use them because you're going somewhere worth going. The common model for safety tools is this: they stop things. This volume is about a different model. Safety tools as alignment infrastructure. Instruments that tell you where the table's real appetite lives. Where to push. Where to route around. And how to know the difference. That reframe holds whether you're running a horror investigation, a dungeon crawl, a heist, or a session of Paranoia where Toadsworth is about to be executed by a vending machine. The tools work the same way. The skills transfer. This is Volume 3 of It's Worse Than That!, the kata series for GMs who want to get sharper under pressure. Four content spreads. Worked examples at each stage of the session lifecycle: before play, during play, after play. Katas that give you room to practice and compare. The goal is reps. The point is that it gets easier. What's in it The intro. An overview of the approach and how to use the katas in this volume, a worked example resolving three ways depending on whether the table's agreements are working as designed, quietly set aside, or used together with real precision, and how to check in without collapsing the tension. Replayable scenes and worked examples across four spreads, each built around a different moment in the session: Before play. How a Lines and Veils conversation builds a scene rather than constraining one. A worked example across three registers: Wonder, Danger, Weird. During play (two spreads). X-card, Traffic Lights, and Script Change in action. A worked example from Paranoia showing how a rewind finds the right shape for a consequence. After play. The "What? So what? Now what?" reflection framework. A worked example showing how post-game feedback becomes next session's prep. Who this is for If you already use safety tools and want to get more out of them, this is for you. If you're skeptical of safety tools and associate them with restriction, this is also for you. The argument here is craft-based: knowing the path lets you go further. The katas demonstrate it. How to use it Pick a spread. Work through the katas. Run them again with different answers. Reading with other GMs and comparing how you'd handle the examples is how the instincts develop fastest. Script Change Ths zine uses Script Change, a tool developed by Beau Jágr Sheldon. It's excellent and you should know about it: http://briebeau.com/scriptchange. Bundle? Available with Winter 2025 and Spring 2026 in the bundle.
