Untitled Writing Game Using Standard Fifty-Two Card Deck

This game was originally developed as a tool to help with writers block. Well actually I made it as a diversion from the project that I felt blocked on. It was written to be both specific enough to latch onto a mental image, but broad enough to still be openly interpretable. I initially developed this to be used in a Noir/Mystery context set in contemporary New York, so there is a distinct flavor of intrigue and danger to these phrases. But I think any setting/genre/vibe can be grafted onto it with a little tweaking. Don’t be afraid to alter any New York-specific phrases! The game uses a standard 52-card deck of playing cards. There are three different categories of phrases: Place Descriptors, Character Descriptors, and Situation Modifiers. Each of these categories have 208 phrases (52 cards x 4 suites). Each category is randomly assorted into 4 columns associated with 1 of the 4 suites in the deck. Within each column are 52 phrases that correspond to 1 of the 52 cards in a deck. There is no hierarchy or thematic organization to the phrases; they are purposefully randomized. I encourage you to interpret these terms and phrases as openly as possible (How many different interpretations of a “wet” place can you come up with?). There is no single answer to any phrase. They are there as a guide for your imagination. I find that I am far more creative if I am given some confines to push off of or against. I hope these can offer some structure to help guide you!
