RALA-8
RALA-8 is a small turn-based arena game about dodging bullets. Nothing moves until you do, and every attack gets marked on the floor a turn before it lands, so every hit is avoidable. In theory. It started as a quick sketch of the combat in a bigger game I'm working on, and it turned out to be fun on its own, so here it is. TWO CHARACTERS On the title screen, left and right pick who you play (you can switch after you fall, too). Entangled: Start with this one first. Born into the flow of things, and carrying a gun. X shoots the nearest enemy in a straight line. Read the marks, step off them, shoot. Thanagen: A Carbon Copy, cut loose from the threads of the world. No gun. X swaps places with the nearest enemy in a straight line instead. The swap does no damage, but the enemy loses its next turn standing right where you were, so whatever was about to hit you hits it. It takes more thinking. CONTROLS Arrow keys - move. The board is isometric, so up goes up-right. Walk into an enemy - shove it X - shoot (you only get 3 shots) Z - knife whoever's next to you, or wait a turn Hold X + an arrow - aim a dash, let go of X to jump (Z cancels) Enter - pause menu TIPS Every fifth wave is a lighter one, and clearing it gets you all your health back. You start with only the shove. The knife, the gun and the dash come with the first few waves. A striped tile means something lands there next turn. The little marks further away mean the same thing. You can step onto a bullet as long as it isn't flying straight at you. Knifing an enemy gives you a shot back. Shove enemies into walls, or into each other to hurt them both. A shoved enemy loses its next turn. Most enemies don't care who they hit. Get a Hunter to shoot a Charger. Chargers get hurt (and dazed) when they charge into something solid. A Warden's shield bounces shots and knives off. Shove one into something to break it. The dash jumps over bullets and striped tiles, but not walls. SCORING When an attack lands right where you were standing a moment ago, that's a close call, and it bumps your multiplier (up to x9). Getting hit drops it back to x1. Kills are worth 10 times your multiplier. Clearing a wave gives you 50, another 100 if nothing hit you, and another 100 if you didn't fire a single shot. There are seven boards. After that they loop with more enemies, so it keeps going until you die. Your best score is saved. FEEDBACK This is a prototype and I'd really like to know what you think: what felt unfair, what was confusing, how far you got. Comments are open! CREDITS Made by Solmare with PICO-8.
