Campfires & Vampires

Campfires & Vampires is a tabletop role-playing game inspired by the Gothic Horror genre and the duality between the Monstrous and Human sides of the characters within. In this game, you play as Vampires travelling the world and staying out of the sunlight. Travel the world, meet new people, and drink their blood. All while struggling to find balance within yourself. Balance is the key to this game, the further you embrace your Monster or your Human, the further away your character is from their true selves. Because this game is about duality and balance, the question of what would be considered a Monstrous act and what would be considered a Human one will arise. It is important to first make one distinction: Human does not necessarily mean morally good and Monster does not necessarily mean morally bad. This game is not about a black and white morality, murdering someone with your bare hands is definitely a Monstrous act, but shooting someone seems (unfortunately) a lot more Human of an action. The distinction between these two stats are not always one of morality but instead focused more on intent and outcome.Duality is at the core of Campfires & Vampires as well as Gothic Horror storytelling a whole. Often, it is believed that having two sides of a character will distract and pull them apart as the two separate sides conflict but in Gothic Horror, this is never entirely true. Gothic Heroes often find themselves battling between their two disparate sides, they try their best to refute one of them, either fully embracing their humanity and ignoring the monster within them, or forgoing humanity and society, embracing the monster people believe them to be. In both of these cases, the Gothic Heroes become uncomfortable and erratic as they ignore their inner truth, balance is key. It is only once they have embraced both sides, creating a new identity for themselves, not entirely human, not entirely monster when they are able to reach a level of peace. Just like these Gothic Heroes, it is important for your character to find peace within themselves. Your two stats Human and Monster are a reflection of this, as one rises, the other falls. As you become proficient in your own humanity, you are unable to embrace the monster, as you fall to the monster within you, you may struggle to tap into your own humanity. It is only until you reach a balance within you, where you are able to use both sides of yourself in perfect harmony.
