The City of Gold - Part 1

"Legend speaks of a man that once ruled a city of gold. Feared by many, the man and his cohort of five studied the unknown realms of sorcery and demons. They ventured into the worlds beyond and returned with riches, but they were also transformed. They forged a temple, a pathway to another realm. Soon the city fell into chaos as abominations and demons ravaged the streets. Only the legend remains. Some say the temple now lies hidden in the darkest forests of these forbidden lands, waiting for someone bold enough to find the city of gold and claim its riches. You are an adventurer, seeking the City of Gold. You really do not have much to go on except a vague map and a few rumours heard in taverns. You have trekked for days and finally arrive at a small inn by the road. Your boots are muddy and your pants are wet. This looks as good as any to spend the night..." - ABOUT THE GAME - The City of Gold part 1 is an cRPG adventure from Per Holmström (Grottkräl), author of the award winning adventure Drakborgen The Secret of Ath Ungol for Dragonbane amongst other things. The game follows the player seeking the City of Gold! Searching for adventure in a fantasy setting. It uses a modern playstyle, in a retro game engine. It features a full story, graphics and even sounds (small snippets of music playing at key moments. The game uses the DAAD Ready engine by Uto (originally released in the 1980s), which has a set of limitations, such as 16 colors (utilizing the Amiga palette switching), a 64kb database for the code (+64kb using Xmessage), making this game very interesting to make and play. Also, the game features a few easter eggs! Can you find all of them? - SYSTEMS - The City of Gold is currently available for AMIGA and HTML (modern computers). Known limitations for Amiga (due to DAAD engine): Every keystroke is logged and buffered, even when the game uses a pause function. This means that a Press Any key can accidentally be skipped. Sounds will be garbled if a new image is loaded while the sound is playing. - STARTING THE ADVENTURE - AMIGA: Copy the HDD files to Workbench, klick the icon and play! Or copy the ADF to a floppy or your favourite USB for GOTEK, instert and play! Or load it in an emulator of choice. 512 KB RAM and KS 1.3 is all you need! Modern/HTML: The game will run on any unit with a browser that supports javascript. Just open the HTML file to get started. - HOW TO PLAY - This simple roleplaying adventure is based on exploring locations and manipulating objects. Common actions combined with objects are: SEARCH, PUT, GET, DROP, EXAMINE (or X), PUSH, EAT, DRINK, JUMP, CLIMB and so on. Examples: SEARCH PILEPUT BAG ON PLATFORM PLACE BALL IN HOLE Movements You move using cardinal points: NORTH, SOUTH, WEST or their abbreviations: N, S, E, W. Occasionally commands as UP or DOWN will also work. Other useful commands INVENTORY (or I) lists carried items. LOOK (or L) redescribes the location. Some items can be combined, such as TIE BLADE TO STICK to create a new item. If you meet a person, these should work TALK <name> ASK <name> [subject] TELL <name> [subject] GIVE <name> [object] SHOW <name> [object] Example: TALK MAN or ASK MAN PILE Example: GIVE MAN GLOVE or SHOW MAN GLOVE - SURVIVING THE GAME - This is an adventure RPG game where you can die if you make ignorant choices, so be wary and careful. That being said, it is important to EXAMINE <all> things. Health and damage You start with 10 HP that can be lost and regained. Your stats can also increase or decrease during the adventure. There are four skills STRENGTH AGILITY PERSONALITY INTELLIGENCE Skill checks are made automatically. STR and AGI will be rolled for using a D100 when the game needs to. STR is mainly used for combat, where attacks always deal a minimum damage of 1, and a successful roll of a D100 vs STR adds +1 damage. Weapons can increase damage. PER and INT are static checks vs skill values. When doing unmoral actions, you have to fail the PER role. Note that the game uses <fail forward> meaning you often succeed, but with varying effects. - SAVING LOADING & HELP - Write SAVE or LOAD to save or load a game (uses a save diskette on Amiga. HTML saves in file) Write HELP on any screen to see the help text again. Write LEGEND to read the intro text again. - LEGAL - The City of Gold Part 1 (C) 2026 Grottkräl.
